This past week over on my Facebook page we have been discussing how to get more consistent in your training. I shared with you three tips to help you break out of the rut and get to running on a consistent basis.
In our discussions on Facebook we talked about the importance of your attitude when it comes to your training. What are you focusing on? Do you think about the negative aspects of your training, like how windy it is, how cold it is, or how tired you are? Do you find yourself dreading your workouts because you know your not in great shape and you know its going to be difficult? These kind of thoughts have a negative impact on your training and play a big role in your ability to train consistently.
What you think about, you bring about!
You have to shift your attitude. Instead of dwelling on things that are negative, I challenge you to think about what is good in your current situation. Look for the blessings.
- I am thankful that I have the ability to run.
- I am thankful that I have a good pair of running shoes and that I have clothes to run in.
- If its cold, be thankful that your not running in the heat and humidity.
- If its hot and humid, be thankful that you get to come home to air condition and a refreshing shower.
- If you are struggling to get into shape again, be thankful that you are not injured.
You can also change your attitude by focusing on how good you will feel about yourself once you’ve done the workout. Or instead of thinking about being out of shape, shift your thoughts to how you will feel after running consistently for two weeks, a month, two months. Picture yourself running in a race and feeling strong and confident. Imagine yourself hitting your goal pace and setting a new PR.
Getting consistent with our training or anything in life really is much simpler than we make it out to be. Shift your mind from negative thoughts to positive thoughts and watch your running improve quicker than you thought possible. It’s that easy!
Consistency starts with your attitude!
Now its your turn. In the comments below share what positive things you will focus on so that you will become more consistent. Do you know someone who is struggling with consistency? If so please share this post with them or on social media.
I love this post! I’ve been asking myself a lot of these same questions in running (and in life)… I also feel like I won’t be running marathons forever. I’d like to do a few more but for the long term I definitely see myself focusing more on shorter distances, too. Congrats on such a solid marathon and huge pr!!
Thanks Laura. For me the training can be so time consuming especially if you have an “off day” on a long run. There are just so many other things I’d rather be doing with my time plus I’m super competitive and with the marathon there are just so many factors that have to come together at the right time unlike the 5K where you can just jump in another one and redeem yourself the following weekend!
Beverly, we SO enjoyed having you with us at HUG in November. After 5 years in Greece, I’ve now returned to a different position at Harding University in Searcy. I look forward to having your son, Bo, in my class! Best always!
